Jim Evans was appointed chair and member of the California Gambling Control Commission by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. on June 12, 2015 and reappointed by Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. on January 9, 2018.

Jim has worked in government, politics and journalism for 20 years. Prior to becoming chair of the Commission, Jim served as chief deputy press secretary in the Office of Governor Brown from 2013 to 2015. Before that, Jim was Deputy Secretary of Communications and Strategic Planning for the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, where he directed communications for the California High Speed Rail Authority, Caltrans, the California Highway Patrol and the Department of Motor Vehicles.

Prior to serving in the executive branch, Jim worked as a senior communications and political aide in the State Senate for Senators Joe Dunn and Mark DeSaulnier. Jim also served as senior aide and Communications Director for Senate pro Tem Darrell Steinberg. In that role, Jim oversaw Senate Democratic Caucus communications strategy.

Before serving in state government, Jim was a reporter. He covered public affairs for the Sacramento News & Review, the California Journal and the Sacramento Bee. Jim was also a financial reporter for Upside Magazine and the Industry Standard, where he covered technology startups, venture capital and investment banking in Silicon Valley and Los Angeles.
